It Must Be the Swing
Actually, it has to be the short game. Or maybe it’s the iron play. It could even be the consistency. No, it’s the driving accuracy.
When discussing what’s most impressive about Evan White’s golf game, all of the above could be considered applicable. That's why the Hilton Head native is one of the top junior golfers in the Carolinas. Evan’s interest in the game began when he was just a toddler. His parents, both avid golfers, first took Evan out to the golf course when he was three years old.
“I was practically born into the game,” Evan says. “My mom would always bring snacks, coloring books, and lots of old golf balls for me to play with when they were golfing. I would hit balls into the water to see if I could get one to the other side of a small lagoon or creek. Mom and Dad would always tell me to keep trying, and eventually, I did start hitting the ball across the water.”
From that point on, Evan’s interest in the game has never wavered. Now an eighteen-year-old senior at Hilton Head High School, Evan was a member of the 2006 South Carolina Class AAAA All-State golf team. He is currently affiliated with the Country Club of Hilton Head (Haig Point), Hilton Head Junior Golf Association, American Junior Golf Association, Southeast Junior Golf Association, International Junior Gold Association and Plantations Junior Golf Tour.
Evan’s favorite part of the game is simply the challenge of getting the ball in the hole. “I also love the fact that it is possible to have the same score as Tiger Woods on a hole or even an entire round,” he added. When Evan isn’t playing golf, he studies the swing of his favorite golfer, Davis Love III. The playing partners in Evan’s dream foursome (to be played at St. Andrews) are Tiger Woods, Davis Love III and Arnold Palmer. “No pressure!” Evan commented. He is also a devoted Philadelphia Eagles fan.
Evan is not only a student of the game of golf; he is also a fine student in the classroom. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society. His favorite class is Introduction to Engineering. Evan’s goal at the beginning of his senior year of high school was to attend college where he could play on the golf team, get a good education, and see where that takes him. Evan’s hard work on the golf course and in the classroom has paid off; he recently signed a letter of intent to play golf for Coach Dr. Jerry Surratt and the Wingate University Bulldogs.
Regardless of whether he takes a shot at a pro career after college, Evan knows that nothing will dim his passion for the game. It’s just too important to him. “There are so many aspects to golf that make it great,” he says. “It’s an individual sport or a team sport. You can play for fun or competitively. And you’re always testing yourself, always trying to improve your game. I'll never lose my interest. My parents taught me to believe that you must have a passion, and golf is mine.”
